This exhibition publication was published on the occasion of the exhibition David Hatcher: Semantic Bliss, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, 21 April - 22 July 2007.

Hatcher's Semantic Bliss settled into its allocated space within the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and instantly took on a life of its own. Over a period of 93 days between April and July in 2007, the work activated the space in conscious ways; the rooms were offered to staff for te reo Maori classes during the week and to the local community on Saturdays for yoga classes. The brilliantly painted space was further activated in a less structured way as random visitors moved the large mono-coloured cubes within the space as they would minimal furniture or giant Lego.

The Taranaki Artist in Residence Programme is a partnership between the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and the Western Institute of Technology Taranaki, supported by Creative New Zealand. David Hatcher was the New Zealand Artist in Residence for 2006-2007.
