This publication offers a window into a project between the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and four Indigenous Taiwanese artists from south and east Taiwan that was conceived to enact connections and encourage future exchanges between the Indigenous peoples of Taiwan and Aotearoa. Writers from Taiwan offer insights into the tribal background, contemporary lives, material cultures, and concerns of the artists Eleng Luluan, Mala Makakazuwan, Akac Orat and Lafin Sawmah. The artists’ own narratives accompany images of the new works created for the Gallery, which were made after reflecting on time spent together during their 2024 two-week residency in Aotearoa. Their resulting works are grounded in the shared beliefs of collective responsibility, community spirit, an inseparable connection to land and sea and the unbreakable bond between past, present and future – all ideas from the edge of Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa which has resonance in Aotearoa. The possibilities of this space, these relations, are conceived as being without centre, and without limits.
